Page 1 of 13 Hybrid Car Sales OverviewThe hybrid car market although modest in terms of the overall light-vehicle market is growing steadily. This growth is a result of penetration of the hybrid car into the US and Japanese Markets. In Europe, hybrid car sales remain relatively low due largely to a lack of general consumer awareness and limited product choice. However, sales of Toyota hybrids did show strong growth towards the end of the year in Europe.
Hybrid Car Sales US Market In the past five years the number of hybrid sales numbers in the US grew tenfold from 9,500 in 2000 to 88,000 in 2004. By the end of 2005, the number of hybrid cars on American roads grew to over 212,000 vehicles in 2005 more than doubling 2004 sales figures. Growth continued in 2006 with a 28 percent increase from 2005 - 254,545 new hybrid vehicles were registered in 2006. 2006 US Hybrid Market Share Based on manufactuer figures - 251,862 hybrids were sold by Toyota, Honda and Ford in 2006. (GM the only other manufactuer selling hybrids in 2006 - does not split out hybrid figures at this time). Toyota the hybrid market leader accounted for over 76 percent of all US hybrid sales. 2006 European Hybrid Sales In 2006 European Hybrid sales totaled 39,880 units with Toyota accounting for over 91 percent of the market. Toyota's hybrid car sales reached 36,470 units in 2006, with cumulative European sales reaching 69,674 units. Honda hybrid sales reached 3,410 units in 2006 up 154.2% over 2005 hybrid sales of 1,345 units.
